Parent InvolvementClassroom Visitation
During a typical year, we encourage parents to be involved with their children at school. Parents are welcome to visit the classroom to share a talent, offer an art activity, help with a cooking activity, read a book or visit anytime. We ask that, particularly for younger classes, you check with your child’s teacher to be sure all children are separating from parents so as not to create anxiety for children (usually sometime in October.) We also ask you to check with your child’s teacher to avoid an overlap of visitors.
Family Resources
Family support resources are available upon request either from the teachers or the Directors.
Parent Chaperones
Chaperoning is an important part of our walking field trips. Chaperones have
responsibilities for children’s safety. Younger siblings may not accompany chaperones on the field trips.
When parents volunteer to chaperone, their duties include:
· Chaperones will help children to walk safely. While walking, they will place themselves between children and the street, helping children to walk in a safe manner, on the sidewalk. They’ll also insure children safely cross any streets. Children should keep their feet on the ground…no parkour, no walking between/on railings, on walls, running beyond the group, etc.
· Chaperones will model direction following and be ready to step in to help children in their care by reinforcing any directions from teachers.
· Chaperones and the children in their care should always stay with the group. Chaperones must reinforce the school’s walking rules: “One teacher always goes first and the other always goes last.” The children and chaperones should always be between the teachers in the line. If a chaperone must step away/out of the line, they must notify a teacher first.
· During “free play” on a field trip, chaperones and the children in their care must travel in a group; a chaperone will not have children in their care at opposite ends of the field trip play area.
· Chaperones will facilitate attendance taking, head counting whenever the teacher stops to do so, whether at the beginning, the end or during the middle of the field trip.
· During story times, if applicable, chaperones will model/reinforce whole body listening.
Chaperone “Don'ts”
No Cell Phones
No coffee/tea
No carrying your own child
No walking away from/outside the group.
Chaperones do not leave with children until the teacher dismisses them.
Parent Workshops
Based on parent interest, guest speakers come to talk about a variety of interests. Parents are asked to commit to attending either a fall or spring child-development/parenting workshop. This year we will offer two evening workshops, one in October, 2025 and one in March, 2026. All are invited and encouraged to attend either and/or both. This year’s topics may include Self-Regulation, Executive Function and Sensory Function.
Room Parent(s)
Room Parents are a valuable part of the success of our school. Room parents meet with Parent Board Members to discuss duties and fundraising during the school year. They may organize a get acquainted gathering early in the year to facilitate parent connection, help organize volunteers for Family Fun Day and the Parent Social, as needed. They act as class liaison between class parents and school board, directors, teachers, etc., Support is available from directors, teachers, board representatives and experienced parents.
School Fundraisers
Parents are encouraged to participate in special events such as our Family Fun Day (a family event with an age-appropriate carnival-like atmosphere), as well as our Fall Social. The proceeds of these events are used to fund scholarships and purchase new equipment for the school. Both foster social connection between families. We also host, at no charge to families, a Back to School Picnic in September and an Art Exhibit in April. Both serve to provide connection and develop community among students and families.
